I always used Outlook Express to access RGP, but with my upgrade to Vista
and AT&T's decision not to support Usenet, I had to switch to
recgroups.com to access RGP. Unfortunately, there were several features
available with Outlook Express that I have not been able to figure out how
to do with recgroups. I would appreciate any advice or suggestions if any
one has figured out how to do the following with recgroups.com:

1. With Outlook Express I could just "select" all posts and threads on RGP
and when they were high-lighted, press "delete" and it would erase all RGP
posts and threads. The next time I accessed RGP, the site would be "wiped
clean" and all I would see were the posts made since I pressed "select""
and "delete". Is there any way to do this with recgroups.com?

2. With Outlook Express I could edit my sent file, so it only contained my
own posts. Is there any way to edit the "favorites" file in recgroups.com
so it only shows the posts I have made?

3. With Outlook Express I could select the font size I wished to use. Is
there any way in recgroups.com to increase the font size of posts you are
making?

I first started lurking Usenet in 1989, and posting actively in 1992. In the
late 90's there started being problems where traffic started to increase
dramatically and sometimes posts from some people were missing.
No matter what news server one used, it seemed that the feed was
incomplete. Now that so many big names like ATT and Comcast have
dropped out, this problem is actually becoming reduced to a non-issue.

I also recommend that you look into signing up for an account with
eternal-september.org. Then you can configure Outlook to use that
account for your news feed. It's free and the feed is practically 100%
complete. Usenet is not on the verge of dieing as some want to claim.
It's been fixed and will be better than ever for a long time to come
for those that know what they're doing.

For the best Usenet access you've likely ever had:

1. Go to eternal-september.org and sign up for an account.
2. In Outlook, select Tools > Accounts and click the News tab.
3. Click the Properties button on the right.
4. On the General tab, enter "news.eternal-september.org" under News
Account. Enter the name you want to go by. Enter your e-mail address. Leave
the rest of the items on this tab blank.
5. On the Server tab, again enter the servre name
"news.eternal-september.org". Check the box for "This server requires me to
log on." Enter your user name you used to sign up with eternal-september.org
in the box labeled "Account Name" and then enter the password that
eternal-september.org gave you. Check the box "Remember this password."
6. On the Connection tab, don't do anything. Leave it all blank.
7. On the Advanced tab, just make sure you have the NNTP port set correctly.
Currently, you should use 119, but this can change. (If it does change,
eternal-september.org will let you know.)
8. Close out of these setup windows and restart Outlook. If you click on
"news.eternal-september.org" you will be prompted to download a list of all
Usenet newsgroups. (This is tens of thousands of groups.) After the list has
downloaded, subscribe to the groups that interest you.

This all works for the new "mail" application included in Vista, which is
essentially just Outlook. Also, these settings are the same for any other
news reader you may have, but the steps needed to access the settings will
be completely different.

There is no better way to access Usenet.
