Right, I'd much rather have some profit-hungry corporate behemoth
deciding what I need. Surely, they have my best interests at heart.

Why would you want either of them choosing what you need? I think that
should be your job. We've become a nation of people that have abdicated
their right and responsibility to take care of ourselves.

You missed the point by a wide margin.

I didn't miss your point at all. You used sarcasm to say that you don't
believe that some "profit-hungry" corporation would have your best interest
at heart.

Well guess what, anyone that thinks a "profit-hungry" corporation has their
best interest at heart would be pretty damn foolish. And anyone that thinks
a "profit-hungry" (oh, by the way, those corporations that aren't
"profit-hungry" are non-existent, so, using inflaming rhetoric in this case
is disingenuous) should have your best interest at heart is pretty damn
foolish.

Let me explain about corporations since you seem to be unaware of their
reason to exist. Corporations exist to make a profit. Of course there are
the non-profit corporations, but they usually are driven by the salaries,
wages, bonuses of those that work for and direct the non-profit activity.
Don't be misled by the "Non-profit" title of these companies, they too need
to make money for someone or some cause and will also cease to exist if they
don't do it well.

Back to "profit-hungry" corporations. They only exist as a place for the
owners of the corporation to invest their money. I'm sure there are a few,
but not many investors that would put their money into a corporation solely
for social reasons rather than profit motive.

Now that doesn't mean that corporations don't have a social or
"good-neighbor" motive. Profit can be made by "appearing" as an entity that
cares about the environment, people's health, traffic problem, or any of a
host of other of social concerns. And since corporations are made up of
people, then in many cases these concerns are genuine.

But don't be lulled into thinking that corporations will or even should
forsake profit by looking out for their customer's self interest. That
would be like asking a human to stop breathing air because it is better for
the environment if there were no human exhalations. Each human breathes in
air not because they want to foul the air with their exhalations, but
because they need the air to live. Corporations need profits to exist.

My answer to your "point" is we as humans seem to be looking at other places
to take care of us rather than taking care of ourselves. Your statement
makes the mistaken point that you don't trust that corporations will look
out for you (as if they should), after bub pointed out that government isn't
doing such a great job of taking care of us (which I believe most people
have started expecting rather than looking out for themselves).

So, again I ask. Why would you want either of them choosing what you need?
I think that should be your job. We've become a nation of people that have
abdicated their right and responsibility to take care of ourselves.
