Casino report, Genting Highlands Malaysia

Just got back from an overnight stay at Genting Highlands resort in
Malaysia. The good things first.

The drive up was beautiful, the resort sits atop a mountain about 6000
feet above sea level, the cool weather is welcome change. Part way up
we stopped and took a cablecar tramway the rest of the way up. Nearly
2 miles of cable car ride over beautiful rain forest below. We got
checked in and headed down to play.

They don't have hold-em was the first thing I was disappointed about.
Well, they do, but it is some bastardized table game where each player
is playing against the dealer, in short it sucked. I only played a few
hands before walking away to look for blackjack

I was told the main casino had blackjack, but I never found it. I did
find a game called Pontoon that was very similar. Needless to say,
after that my wife and I laughed about looking for Pootang all
weekend. Pontoon is dealt like blackjack and the object is to beat
the dealer without going over 21. However there were other ways to
get paid. And if you got 21 without it being a Pontoon, or blackjack
as we call it, you got paid before the dealer finished his hand. Also
if you made 21 with 5 cards it paid 3-2 and 21 with 6 cards paid 3-1.
You could also get paid if you got 6,7,8 suited or some other similar
type hands. I did win 450 ringitt at it the first night, that's about
125 dollars.

We also played some roulette because they had single zero wheels. I
played numbers based on my being a fan of the Cowboys and Emmitt and
Aikman both paid of for me more than once and I ended up winning just
about another 125 bucks there. My wife broke about even

We both played some slots and we dropped a couple of hundred each on
those.

No craps to be found, but they had a dice game called Tai Sai that
used 3 dice and you could bet different combinations of the dice, but
a quick bit of math told me it was a loser. For example betting that
all three die came up the same number paid 150 to one, but the odds of
it are 215 to 1 so the house edge was a horrible 30%

I played some 3 card poker for the first time, same game as over here,
I just had never played it. Was slowly losing money at till I hit a
flush then a straight on consectutive hands and cashed out up about 50
bucks.

The wierdest thing we saw at the tables, and my wife and I both
commented that you would get your arm broken if you tried it in Vegas
was that people standing behind you while you sat at a table game
would reach in and place bets on top of your chips. Mostly people who
couldn't make the minimum bet so they would stack 10 or 15 ringitt on
top of your bet so they could get action too. Even people sitting at
the table with you would sometimes bet overtop of your bet. First
time it happened I was like WaFu? But it was the norm. Strange but
true.

We had a nice weekend that ended up costing us about 210 bucks
including room and food.

The bad things were it was very crowded due to this being the start of
a 2 week school holdiay. Some of the toilets were plain nasty but
that seems to be the norm here.

Also for a developing country it seemed like the table minimums were
pretty steep. Cheapest Pontoon was 50 rm per hand about 14 bucks,
Roulette was 10 rm, close to 3 bucks and that was the smallest chip
you could play. 3 card poker was 25 rm, just a hair over 7 bucks per
bet so about 22 bucks out there at the minumum if you had a hand to
play.

No other table game was less than 50rm. Bacarrat seems to be the game
of choice, they had at least 100 tables of it and had even more people
playing electronically.

Anyway, like I said, nice wekend that didn't cost us much, along with
beautiful scenery for free.
