Not that this is a contest, but what is the worst accident you have
witnessed first hand? I have got to be in the top percentile.
My son is in a PhD program for psychology and keeps bringing me books to
read, surveys to fill out etc.... Frightening stuff really, searching your
inner baggage is a very painful process for most. Based on the
psychological theory that we are a sum of our experiences my son has been
probing me on my views of human carnage.
I have seen some horrific shit but by far the worst was an airplane
accident that rained bodies on my house.
My Dad was a military pilot, which prompted me to get my license and go
the commercial pilot route. Mid way through my education there was a
collision over my home in San Diego. A Cessna hit a PSA 727 sending both
planes and 100+ people into a residential area.
We were lucky, only a body hit our house, airplane parts hit others and
killed people on the ground. Whole bodies, limbs, and guts were strewn
about. They actually brought in meat trucks to preserve the bodies for
identification. I remember the tragic humor that followed. One truck said
Oscar Mayer on it, others also had commercial names on the sides. Hard to
eat a steak with that mental image!!
I didn't fly for some time after that, and even now when I fly commercial
I'm picky about airlines and safety records. Seeing dead bodies is no big
deal for me. Nothing will compare to what I saw in San Diego that day. My
family is amazed at how human carnage doesn't bother me in the least, come
to find out I am a sum of my experience.
i remember that crash. i was in vegas that week (but lived in
Encinitas). thats quite an amazing experience you had but i dont see how
bodies rained out of the sky. the big plane was fully intact until it hit
the ground. the little plane crashed some miles away i believe. maybe
youre saying that when the plane hit, the people were thrown some distance
away and one hit your house? i would be surprised if anything resembling
an intact body existed at all after that nosedive.
i think this is a pictue of the plane going down:

It happened as I said, we lived on Boundary Street. There were body parts,
luggage and twisted metal all over the place. It didn't dig a hole and
bury itself, it scattered all over the place. Our house was one of the 20+
houses damaged, the meat trucks were there. What do you think happened to
the 135 bodies in the 727? I don't care what the newspaper articles said,
I read the reports back then, and it didn't begin to describe what I saw.
I was in the house so I didn't see things fall out of the sky. I heard the
impact and saw the aftermath. There was a body bag, PSA paid for our
roof. 30+ years ago, but that is how I remember it. Here is the official
FAA report:
