Trying to pin it on a profession is futile.

Regardless of who you point to, what really failed here was unthinking
conservative economic ideology -- absolute, blind adherence to the ideas
that markets are inherently self-correcting, and that government has little
to no regulatory role (in complete, baffling defiance of history).

What people on the right can't wrap their heads around is that what failed
was Reaganomics.
