The scientists behind the technology, which has been developed in ***

this way would potentially cost only around 3.5p per kilowatt hour,
compared to about 4.5p for wind energy and between 10p and 31p for solar
power. They say the technology would require up to 50 times less ocean
acreage than wave power

Shouldn't we just wait for private enterprise to solve our energy problem?

Since most private industry slashed their R&D budgets, starting in the
mid 1970's, in order to 'save money', almost all basic research has
been done with government money, to good effect. You can thank
government grants for most of the technology that you take for
granted, including the origins of computing, electronics, the
internet, etc. My opinion is that investment in science is just about
the best thing that big government has done, in terms of long-term
benefits. However, our many congresscritters have repeatedly slashed
budgets there, since so many Americans appear to feel the way that you
do.

They should create a Manhattan Program-size effort to explain the meaning
of the words "irony' and "facetiousness" to the American people.
