I don't see the distinction between a private email and a private message.

The distinction is that email is universal, while private
messages only work within the originating sytem.

You probably don't remember the days when AOL was just its
own service, and didn't have access to the Internet as a
whole. AOL users could only send email to other AOL users,
and not to users of the Internet. Likewise, Internet users
couldn't send email to AOL users, although they could send
mail between any providers on the Internet.

That's the situation today with Recgroups. Recgroups users
can send private messages to each other, but they can't send
messages to users of some other web front-end. People who
read Usenet through a traditional newsreader have no way to
privately contact Recgroups (or other web interface) users,
unless that interface exposes an email address (as Google
does.)

Universal communication is good. Walled gardens are bad.
