I think she's saying the Olympics is more than just a sporting event.

Is she? What is it exactly then? Ok, sementics, shall we say a
series of sporting events, or are you saying that she's saying its
something different?

I'll let her speak for herself, but I consider the Olympics more than a sports event. It is a cultural event, a celebration of the aspirations of peoples around the world, a gathering of good will where young people from diverse countries and cultures get to meet and mingle in peace, no matter what conflicts (armed and otherwise) are playing out at the time.

Sure, it's also been politicized to varying degrees since the beginning (Jimmy Carter being one of the worst offenders) -- but that can't take away the basic worth of this event.

On whether it was appropriate for China to host the games, I have mixed feelings. On the one hand I deplore the politicization, and think that every country should have an equal opportunity to host the games (provided they have the resources) without respect to their political system. On the other hand, I recognize the dichotomy in having an authoritarian or totalitarian government sponsoring the games.

I love watching pakestanis and israelites marching next to each other at the
world series.

So would I, but I suspect for different reasons to yours.

You don't think an event that promotes mingling and interaction among
cultures, even those who are otherwise enemies, is a good thing?

Er...where did I say that?

As I believe that's her reasons, you are saying that yours are different.

Hang on!
World series? Is that where only US teams are allowed to
participate? Or maybe you've let in a few Canadians now?

Miss Universe?

Is that not an international event where other countries can also
enter? If so, surely its an apt title, given that we (the earth) are
the only known intelligence from the universe. Although looking at
sue, I am not sure if 'intelligence' is the right word.

"Only known?" Like the American Indians were the only known humans on the planet (as far as they knew) in 1491?

The only known professional baseball teams on the planet were in the U.S when the World Series began. So a championship series did include all the teams in the world.

When the name "World Series" was adopted, the only professional baseball
teams were in the U.S.

So why the 'world series', if its only an American game played by
Americans? Why not a better title like the US Series or the National
Baseball League etc?

You'd have to ask them. The name was coined over 100 years ago. It has nice ring to it, though, no? Sort of like Miss Universe?

Why does it bother you so? Why are you so insecure?

The English invent modren football, and formed the first League and
the first knockout competition (the FA cup), note that they don't call
the Football League the 'World Championships' or the FA cup as the
'World Cup', or other such nonsense. What does that tell you?

That they knew their place? :)

The "World Series of Poker" had participants from over 100 countries
this year.

Yes, and...?

When it began it had only American players. It evolved.

I suppose to people like you, the US is the world.

"People like you?" How tolerant and inclusive of you.

Your point?

Stereotyping and hypocrisy.

Yes, people like her. Americans like her. If you want
to include yourself in that category, that's your business, but my aim
was not to include all Americans with that sentence. Merely blinkered
idiots who think that the US = the world. The same type of idiots you
get in most countries, not too different from those ultra
nationalistic idiots from China, or of ethnic Chinese origin.

Then why did you include her in those type of people? She hasn't made any such claims. Your statements are circular.
