At work we just had a picnic and during the course of everyone being
social with everyone else, one of the ladies in my department started
talking about her kid's school. Her kids are like in 1st or 2nd grade, and
they aren't allowed to play Red Rover or Tag! They can't play because they
have to touch each other to play.
Can you believe that? I don't even want to imagine a childhood without
tag.
When I was in 6th grade, I played a game called "Smear the Queer." I bet
every male here played this growing up. You have a football, someone has
the football, and everyone tries to tackle the guy with the football.
After he's smeared, he throws the ball to someone else and every beats up
on that guy.
I bet you'd get expelled and charged with a hate crime if you play a game
called "Smear the Queer."
In junior high, we played wicked games of crack the whip. I mean about 20+
all linked by hands and running in a straight line until the leader turned
and snaked the line. With that many people it is amazing how much force is
passed down at the end of the whip. When some of the big strong guys were
at the end people went flying in the air. I was always impressed that no
one got injured or got an arm dislocated, although most of the girls
eventually refused to play after being flung into the air like that.
But, the best game of all was The Deadly Duck. One day out in the field
where we played, someone found a dead, rotting duck. A big one. Another
guy found some baling wire and wired the duck's feet to about a 10-15 feet
length of the wire. The designated person would swing the duck and the
object of course was not to get hit with the fetid duck corpse. Good times,
good times.
