Iran is not, as yet, a danger to the US. A nuclear Iran, on the other
hand, is.
I don't buy that, either. I don't know how old you are, but I was
essentially "there" for the cold war and was in the Air Force when even
the insignia on a USSR officer's uniform was considered "classified."
Things like MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction) and SALT (Strategic Arms
Limitation Treaty) were the common vocabulary back then. The Soviet Union
"might" have been able to destroy us, but the concept that saved us was
that they'd be wiped out too.
Watch Dr. Strangelove again:
"We cannot allow a doomsday gap!"
Even now, no country would ever remotely consider using first strike
nuclear force against anyone. Period. No matter how fanatical they are.
Even if they were bonkers enough, they'd need some sort of delivery
system, and I seriously doubt any country could assemble an ample delivery
system that could inflict serious damage to the US.
Even so, assuming they were nuts enough to pull the trigger, they'd maybe
wipe out one or possibly two American cities before we, with the rest of
the world cheering us on, destroyed their fucking asses completely. Yes,
it's tragic that we'd lose a city or two, Baltimore perhaps, and maybe
Colorado Springs, but we're a big fucking country with a lot of people who
are easily pissed off, if Pearl Harbor and 9/11 are any indication. I
think we'll do fine.
If you fear a nuclear attack of the size they "might" be able to deliver
one day, in your lifetime or many years hence, you should probably just
cash out right now and spare yourself the worry. I spent the better part
of the late 1970's being jolted awake at night whenever a semi rumbled
down Harbor Boulevard thinking the end had finally come. Believe me, there
are more terrifying things to spend your time worrying about. Nowadays, I
sleep very well at night, despite the concerns over a nuclear Iran.
I knew it was a
well-oiled propaganda machine then, and I'm hearing the same damn noise
repeated again in regards to Iran. They may even try the old "smoking
gun" chorus line again. Honestly. I think they're dusting that one
off as we speak.
Which, in my opinion, is the biggest tragedy. By expending and delving
into the credit reserves of goodwill towards America post 9/11, it will
be
infinitely harder to use arguments that sound even remotely similar in
the
future, no matter how true they may be next time.
Precisely. Wise people, like me, saw the bull*** in the Bush
adminstration from the get go. For others, it took a while. But, now
it's pretty clear that nobody except a fringe element of fanatics who are
beyond reason buys what they're saying. So, wouldn't it be nice if we
could just flush the toilet and start over again? I think the world
eagerly awaits the American decision coming up this November, and the
question on every American's mind right now should be how we can best
regain our credibility and start the whole thing over again.
Bush fucked us bigtime.

So if islamic terrorists, and the countries that back them, had a suit case
nuke we can rest assured, based on your infaliable insight, that they would
never detonate it in the U.S.? That's very comforting given that they have
vowed to destroy us and the fact that our borders leak like a sieve. They
have been blowing themselves up for years, proving they have the will to
destroy America but, so far, they've lacked the means. IMHO, it would be
the height of insanity to sit by and wait for Iran to develop a nuclear
capability. But, even if American politicans are content to let them do it,
you can be damn sure the Israelis are not.
