Incident at the Dunes by John Martino

Incident at the Dunes in 1982

When the Perlman brothers owned the Dunes in 1982, Jack Zwerner, whose
mother was a friend of the Perlmans, and Dennis Gomes were managing
the Dunes Hotel. When Steve Wynn purchased the right to Big Julie's
they were making the big transactions for 900K. Big Julie got 700K in
Dunes chips from Steve Wynn. Zvi Hager collected the skim money for
the mob in NY. He was Julie and Zvi tried to cash 700K in chips. Jack
wouldn't cash the chips because he knew they were stolen of skimmed.
They weren't won, paid for chips. Big Julie and Zvi threatened to kill
him From Jack Zwerner.

Jolly Trolley Casino- Mike George- Early 80s

[Mel pointed to where the Jolly Trolley Casino used to be across from
Lady Luck "If you think Jackie Gaughan's El Cortez and Western Casino
Hotel are bad, the Jolly Trolley required rabies and distemper shots
before they'd even allow you to enter," said Mel. "Some players stayed
at the tables there for so long, they looked like death merchants.
They were white and pale, and they probably had scurvy as well. The
closest they came to vegetables, was the malted barley in the 25-cent
beer." The Mad professor- Walking with a Vegas Ghost]

When Mike George, who was Vince Burgio's cousin, was card manager at
Jolly Trolley Casino, he also had a shift at the Tropicana. The mob
from Kansas City was backers or owners and his family was connected to
the mob. Don Lee Moon was a shift manager (hold out guy at the
Stardust) had 5 points in the casino, Don brought Al Silver and Vic
from Chattanooga TN they cheated in craps and blackjack for 400K, one
night they won 200K. Don Lee worked with Vic and Al cheat by putting
in marked cards and crooked dice. Don was one of the best slot machine
mechanics in the early days before the computers.

The Origin of Omaha 1982

[Gwen Pham, a Dragon Lady from Seattle, introduced a new game (hold
'em with four hole cards) at the Golden Nugget in 1982. According to
Gwen, the game was being played a lot in an underground Seattle game,
and when a large group of players from that game descended on Vegas
for the WSOP that year, they found 5 or 6 of themselves all at a hold
'em table at the Nugget. She says at one point only Seattle area
players were seated (others were walking) and so they asked for "9-
card Hold 'em" and Gwen taught the dealers how to deal it. There were
observers on the rail and a lot of interest. When the walkers returned
they decided to try it. Gwen says she went to her room to sleep and
when she came back, it already had been given the new name, Nugget
Hold 'Em.]

Robert Turner: "It was called Greek hold 'em in Memphis. There was a
Dragon Lady named Gwen would play four card down hold em. We played it
at the Nugget hold em 2/4 and then took it to the to the horseshoe."

"Quinn and I were talking about our favorite games we both liked nine
card games Went to Bill Boyd to ask if he would let me spread this new
game. Bill called the gaming commission who came down to watch the
game and sat behind me to explain it to them."

Bill Nirdlinger and John Martino Set up Poker Room in London- 1982

There was guy named Paul the Greek, who knew money people in New York;
he was friends with Victor Romano. Bill Nirdlinger had a connection
with a nightclub owner in England that he knew through Paul.

There were many rich Arabs that would go to London and blow money.
There were big games there and rich clientele. So Bill and me decided
we'd open up an after hours game in London near this guy's nightclubs.
He was supposed to supply the people to play.

In 1982 I went to London with Bill Nirdlinger. I spent 9,000 buying
furniture for the after hours poker club and renting out a flat. While
I was there I met Mohammed Ali; we rode in an elevator at the
Londonderry Hotel. Our connection in London was guy who was the owner
of three bars and was married to royalty. We'd go over to his house
and his wife would tell us he wasn't available. Finally after going to
see him about 5 times she said, "I'm sorry, he's been drinking and he
probably won't help you." He never help us did, he was such a drunk.

The Scotland Yard Report- 1983

["The mystery began in 1993 when the 103 page Scotland Yard Report was
delivered to two Las Vegas journalists, John L. Smith, and myself. Its
sender was not identified nor was it known why we were the only
persons in Las Vegas to receive the document. Mr. Smith wrote the
book, Running Scared: The Life and treacherous Times of Las Vegas
Casino King Steve Wynn, using portions of the information he gathered
from the Report. Following the publication of Running Scared, Mr.
Smith and his publisher were sued for libel by Wynn who challenged the
veracity of most of the information contained in the Report and in
Smith's book. Wynn's libel case is currently threading its way through
the courts." Steve Miller]

[Miller has presented photocopies of the Scotland Yard Report which
have been studied and reviewed by John Martino. Many of the items
corroborate testimony by Martino, including information about Steve
Wynn, Julius Winetraub, Maurice Friedman and Todd Derlacher. The date
of publication is Sept. 9, 1983. For a partial transcription see

Jimmy Doman 1983

Jimmy Doman who won two of the WSOP events in 82 and 83 got chips
pushed off chips because of the side-bet odds. Jimmy played with Al
Korsin and Bones Berland. They played mostly at the Golden Nugget and
sometimes at the Stardust.

[Those were the days (at the Stardust) when players would turn there
hand over and show someone what they had if they wanted them to fold.
Or there would be teams that worked together to shift chips. Two of
the most well known scammers were Jimmy Doman and Bones Berland. Al
Korsin was a member of this threesome of scammers also. Back in the
old days of the WSOP Jimmy and Bones would find themselves in a
situation when they couldn't win the tournament so they had to dump.
My favorite Bones story was when he got unlucky one time and got a
table on the rail and both people that had backed him for that 1000
dollar tournament started comparing notes (how embarrassing).

Anyway the $100,000 was to be given away $5000 to the top 5 of 12
tournaments and an all around prize fund of $40,000 with the top prize
a $20,000 van. OK you can figure out who teamed up to win some of the
tournaments and the van. Jimmy Doman was the take off guy. Between
these three great players he ran away with the points and made money
on the side. The problem was all three wanted to drive the van and
they didn't know how to share. Because it was causing a rift between
good friends they did the only thing possible. They got insurance for
it and burned it up in the desert. Dave Keiser RGP Post 2002]

He was a heroin addict, who bought drugs from Harry Bruder. Doman won
a bunch of money from a big tourney at the Golden Nugget. He tried to
get straight, went to the doctor and found out he had aids. He died
within a year.

["I remember many times when Seymour (Liebowitz) put Jimmy Doman in a
tournament or side games. Jimmy was a good person, and at times a
great poker player, but he had some personal problems. Many people
didn't want to deal with Jimmy because of this, but Seymour almost
always said yes to him. Jimmy sometimes won and sometimes lost, but
most of the time he made money for Seymour. The reason Seymour liked
to help people was that he had a big heart. In Jimmy's case, he
frequently struggled with managing his money, and he had a family to
support. I saw Seymour treat Jimmy like a godson. When Jimmy got
himself into trouble, or went broke, Seymour was always there to help
him out. Now, Jimmy's problems eventually did him in, which is a
lesson in itself, but Seymour never turned him down." Johnny Chan from
Card Player Magazine Volume 14, No. 10]
