First off I would like to thank all those who posted to my "Slow-
playing Dilemma" thread. The responces were almost all excellent.
Now on to business. Basically I would like to know why should I
raise with AK. After all AK is just a drawing hand for the most
part.
As already stated, there is very little distinction between "drawing"
hands and "made" hands preflop - everyone is looking for certain types of
boards and not others.
That said, you should be raising and re-raising for numerous reasons:
1) to value bet weaker unpaired hands (this is the primary reason)
2) to prevent someone from coming in behind you and taking your positional
advantage away
3) to make the pot bigger so you can extract more money if you and an
opponent both hit one pair
4) to represent a big pair so you can more easily take down the pot on a
rags flop
5) to set up for a continuation bet ie. to take the betting initiative
6) because you're a likely equity favorite or tie against most opposing
hands (this is mostly relevant if you'll be all-in or close to it)
7) To avoid having stacks if you play poorly after the flop
You missed (imo) the most important reason for raising AK preflop...
to get rid of the idiot with A7o that will be extracting a lot of chips
from your stupid ass when he flops 2 pair after you let him in cheap!
