Any computer gurus out there? I use Kerio Personal Firewall (changed name to
Sunbelt?) and last night it said that there was an update for me, so I
installed it before going to bed. When I woke up and logged on I got some
weird message about (from memory) "Windows NT has been installed in a
Windows 3.1 directory" and something about moving files? I hit cancel (maybe
I shouldn't have?) and when Windows started (XP pro) it was as if it was the
first time using Windows after a fresh install. "Do you want to take the
tour", etc... All my icons on my desktop are gone, save for a few default
ones, and most importantly all my email/newsgroup
contacts/settings/everything is gone. I had to create a 'new' mail and
newsgroup accounts to post this message.

I tried to do a System Restore, but there were no restore points???? System
Restore was running and active.

Question: has anyone seen this before and more importantly, how do I get my
contacts/email settings back?

all help appreciated.

Sounds like the system has created a new user profile for you. Have a look
in C:Documents and settings and you should hopefully be able to identify
your old profile which will contain much of your user data. As System
Restore has become corrupted I suspect the loss of your profile is a side
effect of a bigger problem, but if you can confirm your old profile is
still present at least you can try and salvage your data before attempting
a full repair of the OS, if it comes to that.
