insulting to be repeatedly told that I am (take your pick):
1. going to hell for being a lesbian
2. going to hell for being a jew
3. going to hell for not accepting Christ
Further, it is insulting to me to say that I should be blindly following
any man's or woman's (including the Pope's or the head Rabbi's)
interpretation of what God is. Whatever God there is or isn't, exists in
the minds and the hearts of each person. Why do religious people (not
Christians specifically) ascribe their entire belief system based, really,
on what one, or a group of other human beings have decided is God? I
think for myself. I think the whole concept of God is something internal
& personal. It has to do with being a moral person and hopefully treating
other people and animals with respect and love. I don't think it has to
do with heaven and hell and church and temple and sinning and being
forgiven.
Now you might consider me an athiest, but I don't categorize myself that
way. I also don't argue my ideas about this with Christians, because I
can't get a word in edgewise, and their eyes glaze over in a religious
ferver which kinda scares me.

Why do so many atheists feel the need to preach their religion?
I'm always amazed at how 'in your face' they feel it's necessary to
makeand to be denigrating and insulting while they are at it.
Just how much more 'in your face' can we be than the government
putting "In God We Trust" on our coins? How much more 'in your face'
can we be than a President who sends boys to die in the name of his
god? How much more 'in your face' can we be than the Jehovah's
Witnesses who persist in waking us up early and won't fucking leave
until we get rude?

Our first fight! It feels so special. You know what they say: 'It's so
much better after you make up'. I can't wait, it's been so long.
Anyway, sure the religious are 'in your face' also but 2 wrongs don't
nowa right, as they say. I'm especially offended by the Atheists always
calling the 'Holy Books' a 'bunch of fairy tales' and calling those who
want to believe in God idiots. Why be insulting? It's not necessary for
making an argument, rather it detracts from it. That's what bothers me
about the Atheists. They get so damned worked up.
btw: I am on the Jehova's Witness' circuit. They visit every month or 2
because I treat them kindly. I know that it's part of their religion to
spread the word, it is a duty for them and I don't mind making myself
available for a few minutes so they can fulfill their obligation every
and then w/ somebody who won't slam the door in their face. They are
clean, neat and polite. We could use plenty more people like them
around here. Plus, I like reading The Watch Tower.
So, it's ok for it to be part of their religion to spread the word, but
it's not ok for an atheist to do the same (not an atheist myself, by the
way).
Many religions have a long history of "spreading the word" via judicious
use of "the sword". Or, ya know, other equally distasteful methods (sure
we have food, starving villagers... now, those of you that want to eat,
meet me at the river for some impromptu baptisms!)
I can't remember, is it 1440 or 14400 that the Witnesses believe get into
heaven? How did they reach that figure, again? Twelve apostles times
Twelve gates, multiply by 100?
Think you'll be one of the lucky *few*?
Having said all that, while I've never seen any compelling evidence
supporting the various individual belief systems, I do think they can be a
very useful tool. Instrumentalists, applaud!
