Re: OT--CC theft--need advice

Thanks for the useful information. I intend to make a police report on
Monday (detective bureau seems to be inactive this weekend). I will then do
the security freeze.

I put a fraud alert on.

Question: do I have to pay each time for each credit bureau credit report,
or is there a mechanism where I can pay one fee and check it as often as I'd
like??

(I also see places like freecreditreport.com or equifax.com can monitor all
3 reports and advise me of any changes)

It (ID theft) happened to me a few months ago. This is what you need to
do:

1. Call one of the three credit bureaus and put a fraud alert on your
report
(this one will contact the other two and put the alert on those fopr you).
This
is stop anyone from opening any more accounts without calling your first.

2. File a police report and then use that to put a security freeze on your
credit reports. This has to be done with each bureau, not just one. This
has
some drawbacks as far as getting new credit, offers in the mail etc., so
read
the bureaus' web sites for info. (Depending on the state, you may be able
to
put a security freeze in place without a police report.)

3. As the other person said, file a report with the FTC as well, so that
they
will notify the SSA and IRS.

4. Check your credit reports every 2 weeks for the next few months.
Sometimes
inquiries (which can result in new accounts) don't show up for 30 days,
and new
accounts can be 90 days behind, so you won't know if you're in the clear
for at
least 90 days.

5. Opt out of pre-approved credit offers. You do this by notifying the
credit
bureaus. This will mean that you won;t get offers in the mail etc., but
also
means that those offers won't be in your mailbox for someone to steal.

Check out http://www.ic3.gov/ for more info. That's the website for a
partnership between the National White Collar Crime Center and the FBI -
has a
lot of good info on it.

Good luck.

I need some advice. Today I received a product that I didn't order. I
called
the company and found out that it was ordered over the internet with my
name, address, and VISA card (it's a card that I pretty much use for
online
purposes).

I then went to my credit card site and found all sorts of purchases made
in
the last month -basically subscriptions made online (eg: Blockbusters). I
haven't even received that credit card bill yet. I called VISA and they
canceled the card and will send me a new card. Meanwhile, I am of course
very concerned as to what is going on. I called Blockbusters and found
that
a subscription was opened using my name, address, and cc. The security
questions/answers were wrong. The email address left was a phony (well,
not
mine, of course). So far, no DVD's or anything was shipped/ordered. I am
trying to figure out what the perpetrator was to gain?? Is the person
waiting to see if I discover it and cancel the card? If not, would they
then
change the address or maybe just order stuff shipped to a different
address?

I checked my credit report and it is clean so far. Nothing new set up. I
worry about identity theft but hopefully I can take the right steps to
prevent that. I also wonder how the heck my card got stolen like this. I
don't

open email attachments; I don't visit questionable web-sites; and I use
up-to-date firewall, spyware, and anti-virus programs (Zone Alarm,
ad-aware,
avg). I just now added a rootkit checker. So far, everything has been
clean.
Of course, I guess thieves have ways of getting into sites and stealing
this
information.

I would appreciate any advice and answers to my questions above?
