Most of the research in genetics and violence gets killed. There pretty
clearly
is a genetic predisposition to violence however.

This is one of those standard debates in criminal justice classes, but I've
never been convinced of this, although I haven't looked at the issue in a
long time. Children pretty much emulate and do what they see and what they
are taught. A "violence" gene? I don't think so.

Not a gene that causes violence, it can't be used for prediciton, and it's not a
single gene, but a genetic compenent that creates a predisposition. That doesn't
mean one gene and it doesn't mean causes.   Enviornment effects differfent
people in different ways and there's twin studies (mostly done by psychologists
in Europe) that suggest there's a genetic predisposition.  It's not as clear
with violent behavior as in some other things such as depression and diabetes
because there just isn't much research done on it for PC reasons.

CJ students tend to be fairly stupid and have debates about all kinds of
nonsense that really aren't debate topics, they are research topics.

I have a few years of personal experience with depression (something there's no
doubt about a genetic predisposision) and mania.  The flight or fight response
is strongly determined by whether I'm in a depressed or manic state.  When I'm
normal my flight or fight response is much more rational and controlled.  But
when in an extreme state my response is pretty much automatic and quick.
BiPolar mixtures can be complicated (it's not a simple depression/mania
division) and there are many otherwise depressed people who often have violent
reactions when depressed.

Genetics is not nearly as simple as a "violence gene".  I'm sure there's not
one.  I'm equially sure there's a genetic predisposition to violence.
