Illustrating a point by using a strong analogy?
Hardly. The idea that such words are "just" politically incorrect is
incorrect, in my opinion. I don't like the use of such words because they
are often intended to convey much more than a comment about a public figure.
There are levels and there are levels. Everyone has their own line in the
sand. Intent is much more important than the words themselves. Many words
and jokes can be told as long as the teller of the joke is "privileged" to
use those words. One does not have to be gay to tell blatantly "gay" jokes.
Non-gay people can tell gay jokes if they are perceived as "joking." The
same is true for any identifiable group. Jay Leno is someone that seems to
hit all the buttons of almost everyone but does not seem to step over the
lines of most people. But if a person means the specific pejorative as a
slur ... then the trouble starts. It can be anything.
Coulter does not really mean that Mr. Edwards is a gay man. She is using
shocking language to make a point. I don't like the point or the use of
that language ... but she wants to do it and that is her right. As far as I
am concerned, her point was that Mr. Edwards has a thin skin and cannot take
such a strong comment without playing the victim. His subsequent action
seems to fulfill that prophecy, if that was part of her comment. When the
shoe is on the other foot, those identified as on the right seem to do the
same thing from time to time.
Coulter has been called some pretty strong names herself ... some even
called here ... her response has never been, that I have read, one of a
victim. I think that is one of the reasons so many people hate her guts and
say so. They say cruel and vicious things. They mean many of the things
that they say. They are justified, in their minds, because she says things
that they find mean and hateful. Interesting.
