Oh yeah, we're supposed to take science lessons from an undereducated,
biggot racist like William "I'm not REALLY a racist" Coleman.
Oh, here are some facts about the global warming issue.
First of all, no educated and intelligent person would deny that
global warming is happening. Where we part company is in blaming
humanity for it.
We know from the geologic record that the Earth has been far warmer
than it is today. there have been period of time where there was no
ice anywhere on the planet. There have also been periods of time when
ice covered the globe. Not only have these conditions existed on
Earth in the past, they have happened numerous times indicating that
the planet goes through warming and cooling cycles over very large
periods of time.
In 1883 there was a massive volcanic eruption on the tiny island of
Krakatoa in the Indonesian island chain. The eruption was the most
massive in recorded history and was heard thousands of miles away. It
was so powerful that it literally blew the island apart. Krakatoa
threw so much volcanic ash into the air that it actually lowered the
temperature of the planet by a couple of degree. The effect of this
was felt into the early 1900's. Meanwhile, scientists tell us that
the temperature has increase 1 degree in the last hundred years and
that the temperature is increasing faster than at any time in the past
600,000 years. They don't, however, take into account the rebound
effect from the Krakatoa eruption.
On the issue of volcanoes, even mild volcanic eruptions put tremendous
amounts of greenhouse gases into the air. Presently there are over
3,500 active volcanoes on land and an estimated 10,000 under the
ocean.
The only information we have about the composition of the atmosphere
comes from ice core samples we take in places like Antarctica.
Scientists tell us that the carbon dioxide levels are higher now than
at any time in the past 600,000 years (600k is the age of the old ice
deposits we can find). Well, if you think about it, that is not
surprising. When the world gets hot, the ice melts... hence, there is
nothing for scientists to compare their numbers to. We have
absolutely no idea what the composition of the atmosphere was during
the last period where all the ice was melted. It is highly probable
that there were large concentrations of CO2 in the air. However, such
a condition would create a fantastically rich feeding environment for
plants (warm temperatures and large quantities of water over huge
areas of the planet, plus a CO2 rich atmosphere which is what plants
breathe). There would have been rich concentration of algae in the
oceans and plants on land. The run-away plant growth would have
created a system where CO2 was rapidly being turned into oxygen. This
would likely have contributed to a new cooling period. Ice would
begin accumulating at the polls and hundreds of thousands of years
later man would be analyzing this ice and saying, "Wow, there wasn't
much CO2 in the air back then."
Speaking of ice... alarmists use scare tactics to try and convince
people that there is impending doom coming from the rising seas. The
ice sheets of Greenland and Antarctica are melting at a fantastic rate
and threaten to increase the sea levels and swamp the costal cities in
as few as 50 years. However, what they DON'T tell you is that, while
the edges of the ice sheets are melting, the central ice cap of
Antarctica has been getting THICKER for the past 11 years. That's
right, I said thicker. Well, how much thicker, you might ask. 45
BILLION TONS PER YEAR! This easily offsets the water being added to
the ocean by glacial melting AND maintains the current balance of
salinity. Why don't the global warming chicken-little crowd tell you
that?
Last year, scientists were surprised to discover the process we call
global warming appeared to be happening on Mars. Scientists realized
that the Sun may play a much greater role in the climate of Mars and,
obviously, our own climate as well.
If you examine the CO2 data from the various scientific websites, you
will notice that a large part of the contribution associated with man
comes from "biomass." Basically, they are adding in all of the CO2
produced by breathing from every person on the planet and every animal
under our control. While it is true that this is part of man's
contribution to CO2, it is misleading because this is something that
we can do absolutely nothing about. It is something that exists
regardless of technology and regardless of the burning of fossil
fuels.
The Kyoto Accord, which environmentalists tout as the best hope for
the future of the planet, mandates strict emission standards for
industrialized nations. Nations which fail to meet those standards
could buy units from nations which fall below the imposed limits.
Nations which are struggling to become industrialized would basically
get a pass on emission standards. Without getting into the flawed
economic threory behind this accord, let's take a second to look at
the projected outcome. Scientists believe that in another 100 years,
the temperature of the planet will increase 2 degrees. If we
implement Kyoto world-wide, then the temperature will increase only
1.6 degrees. So, if we implement this accord, it will certainly be a
financial hardship for the country since so many of our industries
will have to spend hundreds of billions of dollars to come into
compliance and for that gigantic investment we buy ourselves
four-tenths of a degree?!
I could go on and on, but I think that's enough for now. The bottom
line is that we are not masters of the environment or of nature. It
takes only an event like a hurricane, tornado, earthquake or tsunami
to make that fact all too clear. This is not to say that we should
act environmentally irresponsible. We should take good care of the
only habitable globe within our reach. We should develop cleaner
technologies and sources of energy. We should recycle and aspire to
have better and better clean air standards. HOWEVER, we should not
cut our own throats economically for some ill-conceived plan to
address something that has happened before (and will happen again)
because some people believe it MIGHT be a problem. I'm sorry, but
that is just fucking stupid! We can't predict hurricanes, we can't
predict tornados and we can only predict the weather a couple of days
in advance with any degree of accuracy, but we're supposed to believe
that scientists' computer models can tell us what is going to happen
in 100 years even though they themselves admit we really don't
understand most of the dynamics of our climate?! Yeah, right!

When will you shills and apologists for oil companies admit that global

Record heatwave strikes
By Andrew Gorder, Journal Staff Writer
RAPID CITY -- Temperatures exceeding 100 degrees Saturday broke and tied
all-time records throughout South Dakota.
The National Weather Service in Rapid City received reports of 120 degree
temperatures in Usta in the northwest corner of the state, but the reports
had not been officially confirmed by Saturday evening. If the reports are
accurate, the temperature would tie the state record for high temperatures
set in Gann Valley in 1936.
NWS meteorologist Jeff Johnson in Rapid City said temperatures reached 111
degrees at Rapid City Regional Airport, beating the previous record of 110
degrees set in 1989 and 1973.
Temperatures in downtown Rapid City missed the all-time record of 107 by one
degree, Johnson said.
There were also record highs of 116 in Philip and 111 in Interior, and The
Associated Press reported 115 degree temperatures in Pierre, 114 degrees in
Mobridge and 108 in Mitchell.
"There were a few places where we didn't quite reach triple digits, but
pretty much all of the prairie areas east river were well above the 100
degree mark," Johnson said.
Johnson said the sweltering temperatures and high winds will increase the
already high level of fire danger. "We will still be at 'red flag'
conditions tomorrow," Johnson said. "We probably won't see a cool down until
the end of next week, so we still have several days of hot, dry weather
ahead of us."
Although many opted to spend Saturday inside with the air-conditioner, the
extreme temperatures did not deter thousands of people from attending the
Hills Alive Christian music festival held in Memorial Park in Rapid City.
"I'm sure that there are some people that stayed away because of the heat,
but I also know that people know what happens at this festival, and they'll
come out to see the artists that they want to see," said Suzanne Happs,
program director for KLMP radio and volunteer organizer at the festival.
Happs said about 30,000 people attended the festival in 108-degree heat last
year, and they were hoping for more people at this year's event.
"It's been a progression," Happs said. "We had 22,000 the year before last,
30,000 last year, even in the stifling heat. We're hoping that it just keeps
growing."
"It's going to take hotter temps than this to keep me away," Susan Keller of
Chamberlain said.
Younger attendees opted to skip the music and cool off in Memorial Lake, and
about 25 children chose to swim in the park's water fountain.
Despite the crowd's overall enthusiasm, the heat did take its toll on a few
of the spectators.
Dr. Jeffrey Buckau, who was voluntarily manning the festival's first-aid
tent, said they had at least four heat-related incidents on Saturday.
The most significant was a woman suffering from heat stroke. "Her
temperature was going up, her blood pressure was dropping, her pulse rate
was going up and she was throwing up," Buckau said.
Buckau was working with volunteer EMTs to treat patients suffering from the
heat.
With only the slightest dip in temperatures in the forecast, Buckau
recommended that those attending the festival today stay out of the sun,
keep physical activity to a minimum and drink plenty of water.
