Easynews.com (for example) is a site that strips newsgroups of binaries (video, music etc.). Now you can also create an account in a newsreader (internet explorer has one built in) that allows you to read threads like these. MOST of the time your mail server (if you don't use web-based mail like hotmail or the likes) will have a news server built in.
Here's how you do it.
Let's say you use earthlink.
You will go into internet explorer or netscape, choose "accounts". You should see a news tab or something of the like. Now, under the server properties you type news.earthlink.new. If you set up an e-mail account through your provider you would have typed mail.earthlink.net. See the difference of the prefix news and not mail. Now, sometimes it will require a login which is just your internet login. For the earthlink example it's just your e-mail address and your password (the same you used for mail).
If none of the applies, do a search for "free news servers" on the search engine of your choice and it will give you the info you need;including login info.
If everything goes right it will ask if you want to download the list of available newsgroups (usually 10,000+ so it may take some time) on the server.
Then you choose which newsgroups to subscribe to.This usually just means typing the first couple letters of any word in a news group (for example: typing po will bring up alt.rec.poker).
It sounds like a pain in the ass but here are the bullet points.
If you use your ISP's mail (sbc, earthlink, whatever) just use your MAIL client and setup a NEWS account substituting news.xxxxxx.com/net for mail.xxxxxx.com/net.
If not look for a free one (there are a bunch) and they will not only give you all the info necessary but they usually provide a FREE news reader.
If you have any questions you can post it or e-mail me personally.

I'm sure you'll do fine.

OK for all the web based newsreader haters here is your opportunity to
contribute. I use recgroups because I don't have the generation of
experience in "driving my software" that so many of you do (as an example,
in going through med school I only used computers to type my papers, my
little brother who just got his MD at Shreveport last weekend, Congrats
Matt!, had virtually 100% of his course work on the school provided
laptop, with wifi capability through out the campus) so please give a
short tutorial, without any geek speak so that when I get home tonight I
can down load a news server and a news reader (you need both right?) and
try to figure out why this is so much better than reading RPG from
recgroups. This tutorial has to take into account that I am computer
naive, I think the real skill for you computer geeks is to be able to
communicate what is simple for you to the ignorant but not incapable. Lets see how you do. To give you an idea of how ignorant I am, I had no
idea that Usenet existed prior to starting to read RGP on a web based
reader.

Chic, it doesn't matter what you do, you're always gonna smell like fish.
