OMAHA Beating Small Stakes PLO
With this simple advice, you can beat small stakes online PLO.
These are the starting hand requirements for FULL games, not
short-handed ones.
A. 4 to a 7-high straight or higher. This means hands such as 3,4,5,7
or 4,5,6,7 or 3,5,6,7 etc. The 'higher part' means higher hands
like this, such as 8,9,10,J or 7,8,9,J. Got the gist? You don't want
hands like 10,10,9,8 or 7,7,6,5. Forget these types of hands. And
forget hands such as AKs,Q7s and such. You'll discover they're not
worth playing.
B. Your next grouping is hands holding two pairs, such as 6,6,9,9 or
5,5,J,J and such. The higher the better.
C. And finally the always lovely AA hopefully with suits. Forget about
the other hands.
Background FYI - When they see a raise everyone tends to assume that
the raiser holds AA, mainly because the weaker players do and usually
only raise with them.
The secret of playing correctly and profitably in PLO $.50-$1.00 blind
and $1.00-$2.00 and smaller blind games:
When in early positions, with any of the hands mentioned above, raise
3-4x the BB.
In the late positions, and I do mean the button or next to the button,
raise close to the amount of the pot. Most of the time you'll be put on
having AA.
Remember I'm talking about .50-$1.00 blind and $1.00-$2.00 blind
games here.
Now, if the flop hits you move in for as much as possible. Say you hold
5,6,7,8 and the flop come 4,5,9, move all-in first chance you get.
Obviously, if three to a flush hit on the board, throw the hand away.
Many times when you have these types of hands and raise, players will
make moves on you thinking you're holding AA. You may have flopped the
nuts, for that time and they'll move in on you thinking you're holding
AA.
Don't be afraid of gambling with these hands. If the players on your
immediate right get small stacks, it may be time to find a better game.
If you get lucky and win a couple of pots, quit the game and go to
another and start the same way. Start with about 3x the minimum buy-in.
Good bluffing situations occur when an A hits the board without a
straight possibility. When you're in the late positions, you can pot
the pot and have a good chance of taking the money since they expect to
see AA in your hand. Other good situations to bluff occur when you
happen to raise with AA and three to a suit hit the board and you hold
a bare A of the suit. Since you have potted the hand, or at least
raised in early position, most players will back off if you pot or
raise if they bet to find out how you stand. You realize, you hold the
possible NUT flush, so they're basically testing the water. This is
called playing poker; it's called bluffing.
This is a beginning lesson for Pot Limit Omaha High. It should bring
you success in the low stages of cash games. You will have
fluctuations, but these are about the only hands I play in the game,
except when getting away in the BB or having to call a single unit in
the SB.
The higher games get a little more complicated, but we'll address
those later.
