Re: Insane Iislamic Bull ***

Worry about my house after you've cleaned up your own house.

Cleaning up the catholic church should pretty much take your lifetime.

OK Art. We all get the point. You're an atheist and you hate religion.

One thing I've never understood about atheists is why they waste so
much
time and energy railing against something they say they don't believe
in.
Especially since they swear there is nothing but dead, black emptiness
after
this life. You're how old Art? I'd guess about 40. That means you've
already used up more than half of your life. I'd think you'd be out
chasing
wine, women and song, or at least be doing something productive,
instead of
wasting your few remaining years arguing against something you don't
believe
in.

"Conservatives prefer to rely on mutual expectations between
individuals to build a good society."

Building good society through mutual expectations of individuals
requires no belief in myth.

"Religious institutions do the best job of engendering such
traditions."

No, they don't. They have done a fairly horrible job of it.

"Foundational traditions
of a society that's survived the worst the world can throw
at it while producing outstanding individuals in every field
of human endeavor aren't welcome in the Left's public square."

You can have your traditions all you want. Claiming the 10
Commandments as a "foundational tradition" belonging in the "public
square" is pretty silly. Let's take them one by one...again

#1: Purely religious. Our society is not founded on this principle in

any way. In fact, our society explicity grants the right to break
this
commandment.

#2: Purely religious. Our society is not founded on this principle in

any way. In fact, our society explicity grants the right to break
this
commandment.

#3: Purely religious. Our society is not founded on this principle in

any way. In fact, our society explicity grants the right to break
this
commandment.

#4: Purely religious. Our society is not founded on this principle in

any way. In fact, our society explicity grants the right to break
this
commandment.

That's 0 for 4. Not doing real well on your claim of "Foundational
Tradition" are you?

#5: Honoring your ma or pa is not a bad idea at all. No law enforces

it and our society explicity grants the right to break this
commandment. For example, if your father molests you, you need not
honor him.

0 for 5.

#6. "Don't kill anyone." Honestly, do you need an invisible being to

tell you this is wrong? Would murder be against the law in the US
without this commandment? Of course. Does the US allow state
sponsored
killing? Wow. Why yes it does. I guess as a "foundational
tradition" #6 is out the door too.

0 for 6.

#7. Be faithful to your spouse. Again, good idea, but nookie on the
side is not against the law. Taking a quick peek at the divorce and
infidelity rate coupled with the fact that a large percentage of
those
cheaters and divorcees got married in a religious institution does
not
bode well for this "foundational tradition". But, I suppose you could

call it a good goal. In any case, it has no bidness in a state
institution.

0 for 7.

#8 "Don't steal". Finally! A "Commandment" that actually is enforced

by law! Did we need an invisible being to tell us it is wrong to take

what does not belong to you? I sure don't.

1 for 8. Not a good track record.

#9 No bearing false witness. This one does appear in law and is
enforced in contracts and testimony under oath. Would perjury still
be
a crime without the 10 commandments? I think so, but I'll grant this

one appears on the law books in the public square.

2 for 9.

#10 No coveting. This one is just plain stupid. As George Carlin
said: "Coveting creates jobs. Leave it alone." Not in any way a law
or a foundational tradition.

2 for 10. The 10 Commandments are not a foundational tradition. They

do include a single common sense idea: Don't Steal. The rest is
religious fairy tale bull***.

Now why in hell would the 10 Commandments be appropriate to post in a

state building? You want them in your home? Fine. Church? fine.
