Ruling, please (BAHH)

I wasn't involved in this hand, but a friend I had driven to the B&M with
was.

Action was pretty intense on the hand. The flop showed two clubs, the turn
put 4 to a straight on the board, and the river put 4 to a flush on the
board including the A and the Q.

There were three players still in the pot on the river. My friend, a drunk
beginner, and a maniac. My friend acted first, and he checked. The
beginner bet, and the maniac raised. My friend looked a little perplexed,
but he ended up calling. The beginner then reraised, and the maniac folded.
Now visibly agitated, my friend called again. He flipped over his cards to
show the second nut flush (he had the J). Now the beginner thought everyone
had folded and had started to push his cards towards the muck pile face
down. He was doing so slowly like he was unsure about what he was supposed
to be doing. The dealer, meanwhile, was preoccupied trying to calm down
some shouting that had begun on the other side of the table where my friend
and the maniac were. Some players not in the hand as well as my friend had
become visibly agitated by the maniac's suspect raise-fold on the river, and
some profanity was being thrown about. They do not allow profanity in this
poker room, so the dealer's attention turned there first. When the dealer
looked back, the beginner's cards were inches away from the muck pile.

I had tried to say something to the beginner as he was sliding his cards
towards the dealer, but I was drowned out by the shouting. There was
another player who was also trying to say something to the beginner, but his
shouts were also drowned out. Once everything was quieted down, the dealer
asked the simple question of, "what's going on down here." That's when she
first noticed the cards face down by the muck pile, so she touched them to
the muck pile to signify a dead hand.

Now, the player in seat 10 said (which I kind of found humorous because it
was so obvious), "but he's got the nut flush."

The beginner then asked, "am I supposed to turn my cards over? I thought
everyone folded."

The dealer looked obviously perplexed, so the player in seat 10 went
slightly over the line by flipping the cards over (oops). I looked right at
the dealer and said, "you better call the floor."

The floor ruled that the beginner's hand was still live, and the dealer slid
a very nice sized pot his way.

My friend was understandably livid.

On the way home, I explained to him that, even though I think the casino
made the wrong decision, the one thing working against him was the fact that
there were 8 players at the table who were happy to see the beginner get
chips because they were much easier to take. He was pretty much
unconsolable, though, as he finished about $80 down on the night, and that
pot was worth about $120.

Thoughts?

that, if they do fail, they do so in an interesting way.
