Right. IIRC it came out in that trial that McDonalds knew they had a problem
with customers seriously burning themselves on their too hot coffee but they
refused to lower the temperature to industry standards because it was
somehow saving them money. Also, the believe the plaintiff was found
contributorily negligent for placing the coffee in her lap, and her damages
were therefore reduced a commensurate amount.
A lot of these "outrageous" settlements don't seem so outrageous once you
have a grasp of ALL the facts.
