i was going to say something along the same line, about the myth of
table selection. new players to vegas think they will be disciplined
be very selective about choosing the best fishiest games, and scoping
for the real live ones. but after awhile, their enthusiam wanes and
they begin to get lazy. they soon become one of the local regulars
themselves. they realize that a lot of the people they thought were
tourists are also locals who jump all over town to keep a low profile.
there arent as many tourists for the locals to pick over as it may
seem.
also, the really fishiest tourists are in town for more than poker.
they have shows to see and s.o.'s to entertain, etc. fishy games dont
last very long before they degenerate into a local rock garden. and
then everybody is straining their necks looking around the cardroom to
see where the action is. its easy to become a table jumper constantly
requesting table changes until you become a pain in the ass to
management. after a few months, youve developed a group of buddies you
enjoy playing with anyway, and you spend a good portion of your days
passing the money back and forth waiting like vultures. and there are
a lot of vultures that need to eat. game selection is nice in theory
but difficult in reality.

ha! i dont think fell is an exercise freak. he said he walked from
Bellagio to NYNY and it wore him out. what is that, a block?

Why would anybody try to make a living playing poker in Las Vegas when
Los Angeles has so many great games? These days every casino has a
huge no-limit section in addition to the limit games. I was in Las
Vegas in August for BARGE and wasn't that impressed with the games
there.

Of course, the weather is much better here (Long Beach). If you say
it's because the cost of living is less in Las Vegas, I don't think
that's a good reason. In fact, the cost of food was ridiculous when I
played at the Wynn and Bellagio. If a person is good enough to make a
living at poker, they should be able to fade the cost of housing in Los
Angeles, expecially if they're willing to maintain a modest lifestyle.

Cost of living my dear :) LA would be great, but the cost of living to
find a decent place (I have a full house worth of furniture coming with
me) would be too great. I'm trying to minimize my monthly nut as much as
possible. In the future, LA is certainly an option. Yes, the Strip can
be expensive, but off-strip and cost of rent etc is much much better than
LA.

You're married? If not, why be burdened with stuff. I've learned that
the less stuff you have, the easier life is. I was living in a high
rise on the beach, but for the last 10 years, I've cut my expenses and
eliminated most of my unnecessary stuff and have saved a ton on money
by finding a bargain place to live, but it's in a great area.

Of course, if you have a family, that's different. Hopefully, your
wife has a job that provides medical insurance. Good luck, Fell.
You're going pro at a good time.
