So, Mo read or heard about someone who had trouble with a cashier
giving change. Sounds to me like proof that our mathematics programs
are failing.
it was a joke emailed to me by a friend. are you and gary that uptight?
Of course, Mo probably never bothered to check any
statistics on the subject or he would have known about the National
Center for Education Statistics which has shown that ability in
mathematics for U.S. children has been climbing since 1973 (the
earliest study that they did) for both 4th graders and 9th graders and
that it's been level for 12th graders.
i won't even debate your fallacious point; i'll GRANT it to you. care to
do a real cost/benefit analysis, tom? we know you can read, but can you
do some real analysis? here, i'll give you a couple starting points:
http://www.heritage.org/Research/Education/images/image002.gif
we spend more than everybody else for what?
http://www.heritage.org/Research/Education/wm478.cfm
"
Despite higher than average per-pupil expenditures, American 8th graders
ranked 19th out of 38 countries on the most recent international
mathematics comparison, the Third International Mathematics and Science
Study-Repeat (TIMSS-R) of 1999. American students scored 18th out of 38
countries in science.[23] In combined scores of mathematics and science
literacy, 12th-graders in the United States ranked 18th out of 21
countries on the 1995 TIMSS assessment.[24]
On the most recent Program for International Student Assessment combined
reading literacy scale tests, American 15-year olds scored near the
average. Of the 27 countries that participated, Canadian, Finish, and New
Zealand students had the highest scores.[25]
"
so, we spend a lot more, and our students are below average. i think
we'll solve this by ADDING funding - the democratic way. don't solve the
goddamn problem, just throw money at it so your dumb constituents' fears
can be assuaged.
Oh wait, but some right-wing idiot came up with a cute little joke with
fake math questions. The NCES couldn't possibly be right confronted
with that kind of proof.
care to explore the difference in performance between public/private
schools and the relative costs/prices associated with them? nah, can't be
bothered with REAL fucking analysis - that makes funding tactics a little
tricky.
here, i'll do your homework for you:
http://www.heritage.org/Research/Education/wm478.cfm
"
Over the past 30 years, average per-pupil expenditures for public,
elementary, and secondary schools have nearly doubled, rising from $3,931
in 1971-1972 to $7,524 in 2001-2002, in constant dollars.[9] Expenditures
vary by state, with the District of Columbia spending the most at $12,046
and Utah the least at $4,674 per student.[10]
"
yep, that's a REAL, inflation adjusted increase in spending - DOUBLED in
30 years. for what? your sacred ten points on the NEW SAT.
guess what, private schools do it better for less:
http://www.heritage.org/Research/Education/wm478.cfm
"
The average private school tuition, according to a 2003 Cato Institute
study, is $4,689. The average private elementary school tuition is less
than $3,500, and the average secondary school tuition is $6,052.[13]
"
do a little work, tom - and tell ME how much homeschooling costs and
whether those kids do better, or worse than even the private school kids
do.......
You would think that someone who is complaining about the level of
skill in mathematics in this country might actually look into
statistics for it, but then that's probably math that's too far above
his head. Or rather doesn't jive with his pre-conceived right-wing view
of the situation.
rightwing view? lmao! i guess you're okay with your money getting pissed
away - i'm not, tom.
