cards matter when out of position, not 100% but greater than 20%. with
position, probably less than 10%...in fact, there have been a couple of
instances where i'll voluntarily fold a pretty strong hand w/position
(like K8ish) just because i feel as though the fold is the best means of
keeping the flow of the game in my favor. this is in button games where
the sb has the button.

you speak of controlling the matches, i usually find i do best when i
don't attempt to control it. at my best i don't go out of my way to
dominate my opponent, rather i feel the flow of the match and attempt to
direct the flow in my favor. the matches become fairly easy if you can do
that. when i attempt to run over a person i sometimes lose feel for them
because my own presence is so overpowering...if that makes sense.
