Feel free to vent here. There are always some in the bunch who are going to
critique your play and call you a loser, but at the very worst, it might
make you a better player while keeping you off tilt.
Last weekend, I played in a B&M tourney where I got bad beat on two straight
hands to take me from first place overall to getting beat on the bubble, and
both hands were almost identical.
In the first, I had K-7 offsuit in the big blind. No one raised, so I got
to see the flop for free. The flop was 10-7-7. I felt like I was in pretty
good shape, but I'm not willing to risk my position in the tourney for the
possibility that someone else might have a better 7 than I. I bet about
half the pot, and I got two callers. The turn card was a K. I filled up,
and I was feeling good about it. I checked, hoping that the check would
represent that I was holding a 10. The player behind me bet, and the player
behind him raised all-in. In the spirit of being a good sport (trying to
eliminate someone), I simply called. The player behind me then also raised
all-in, and I was pot vested with a chance to take out two players. I also
called.
The first player (the one with the bigger stack) showed A-7, and the second
player (the one with the smaller stack) showed a pair of slow-played A's. I
chuckled to myself as the realization set in that I had just made the money
with a well played premiere hand. There was one card in the deck that could
beat me, and guess what...it came on the river. That A filled up both of my
opponents, and I could only shake my head as the AA took home the main pot
and the A-7 took home the side pot.
On the second hand, I got A-Q suited in the small blind. Again, no one
raised, so I called to see the flop (I didn't want to raise with three
players already in the pot....not with AQ from the small blind. If I had
position, things would have been a bit different). The flop was Q-Q-4.
This time, I checked from early position. The next player (UTG) bet about
twice the pot, which made me think about what he could have. I couldn't
imagine him limping with pocket 4's UTG, and I couldn't imagine him limping
with Q-4 in any position. The player after him raised all-in. That really
put me in a connundrum. This time, I wasn't taking chances. I reraised
all-in and the player behind me who had a few more chips than I called. He
showed pocket 4's. The other all-in showed Q-4. With only nine outs on the
next two streets, I never did fill up. I left the table shaking my head
with the realization that I had finished one off the money after losing with
the two best hands I had seen all day.
