Wireless performance is better on the same floor. Some people have problems
getting dropped, some don't. Depends on the router and your home. Can't you
run some cable install the router on the same floor?

Some BIOS support password protection, some don't. You can use Windows User
password too.

Yes. First you have to use Windows to network the two computers and
designate what folders you want to share. You have to disable the puter
firewalls and rely on the router firewall

Not sure how this is done. I just save the new work on the laptops shared
folder and retrieve the updated file when I get to the desktop puter.

It should be pretty much automatic but as usual Murphy's Law applies.
