OT: My Thoughts on Katrina stuff

Just 2 random thoughts from a person who's probably a bit of a schizoid or
sociopath and lacks any empathy.

1. Why is everyone in such a rush to donate to these people? IMO, these
people brought it upon themselves and don't deserve sympathy just as a
person who builds a house on an active volcano doesn't deserve sympathy
when the volcano erupts and their house burns to the ground. Besides,
most have insurance and will receive some form of compensation for their
losses...why double pay? (and yes I know that insurance companies will
probably not repay them the full amount of their losses and that it will
take a while to receive the money, but these same people knew that as well
when they decided to live down there)

I just don't see the purpose of these donations. I'd much rather donate
money to truly innocent victims...like orgs that support abandoned
children and stuff like that. Donating money to a bunch of people who
decided to live in hurricane infested areas just because they got hit by a
hurricane seems dumb...they knew what they were getting themselves into.

2. Hosting a poker tournament with money going to relief efforts is dumb
and donating some % of your unguaranteed poker earnings is hollow.
Tournaments are dumb because a. it may limit the amount that a person
would have donated to the effort...setting up a "relief" account for
people to transfer their money to would be much better for online
cardrooms IMO and b. IMO it shows that you have a low opinion of your
customers since you believe that they will only make donations if you
provide them entertainment afterwards.

For those donating a % of their wins and even worse, publicizing it, if
you were truly sympathetic you'd just quietly donate a set amount right
now out of your own pocket and then use poker to hopefully offset this
donation. While what your doing, I suppose, can be considered admirable
I think it's somewhat of a copout and is merely being done for show.
Besides, what do you do if you make no or very little money next month?
Pat yourself on the back and say "I at least tried!"? It's all
masturbation for your conscience IMO.

In the end, it is your money and far be it for me to tell you what to do
with it....but while *attempting* to do something is better than doing
nothing it's not the same as doing something, and I view using poker
profits as donations as attempting.

Those are my thoughts...not looking to troll...not even looking for
replies. Just offering another school of thought.
