Screen resolution problem

I've been wanting to 4 table so I bought a 19 inch monitor with
1200x1600 screen res potential to hook up to my laptop. The guy even
proved it to me at the computer shop befor I bought it. My dell laptop
has one of those little sliding bars just like the online nl and pl
betting displays which goes up to 1200 x 1600 on the display setting
page.. The desktop got real big, but All I had on the 19 in screen was a
much bigger table taking up all the viewing space. What am I doing
wrong?
