If it helps...

I don't run virus software - I let them run and I play with them like
some sort a puzzle!

I can most normally work out where it/they (the virus) are going and
figure a solution.

However on the very rear occasions I cant I just reinstall windows XP
(takes me about 4hrs to get back to how I like the settings set) for
the ultimate clean drive.

I also, run a second hard-drive for all important and personal stuff
so if C-drive (which is less than 20gb on all puters) does go up the
shoot, I simply disconnect this 'other' drive, thus saving my
important files.

Good luck,
g

That's funny "rear occasions" ;-)

This was the first thing that got through in years
that actually affected my ability to do whatever it
is that I do with my puter.

What also ticked me off is it disabled the anti-virus
software from updating even though it had been updated
within days and kept the new stuff I tried from running.

Note: If your anti-virus software is disabled do not
delete it as it isn't actually gone bad just disabled
and you won't be able to install it again anyway without
getting rid of the virus/malware/hijacker first.

The only thing that worked was data micro's (free)
Hyjackthis and after I set Win xp back to Nov 1st
thanks to Evil Nigel.

....I had a similar problem with the Windows Vista Premium OS recently, where my BitDefender Antivirus 2010 refused to update and kept showing that it was turned off even though it wasn't.

I used SpyBot's free latest creation to search and immunize against malware, and then un-installed and re-installed BitDefender. That seemed to correct the situation so far...But it always leaves a feeling of distrust in any software you run or websites you visit anymore...using free or subscription antivirus programs that can be so easily defeated or fooled is not a good feeling.
