Ladeez and Gen'lmen, step right up and see the latest and the greatest
piece of equipment made specially for your preserving activities.
Yessiree, Bob, this 21-quart waterbath canner will provide you ezzACKLY
what you need for safe waterbath processing of your fruit products and
your bread spreads. Yessiree, and it is YOURS for only $78.99 (USD)
die-rect from those fine folks at Jarden, makers of fine Ball brand
products ever'where.
Me, I'm keepin' my Bigass? Demeyere pot, thankyewverymuch and my
Farberware 11-quart stockpot. Both are quite sufficient for my half
pint and pint jars.
They don't even tell you the diameter of this sucker.
I think THIS is the kind of thing that will discourage novice
preservers. There's no way I'd lay out $80+shipping for something I
might use once and never again, unless I was making spaghetti sauce for
a crowd.
wow Barb, lookit that! I think I will stick with the pot I bot from my
local Canadian Tire - it's one of those black pots with the greyish flecks
all over it.
Known as "granite ware." :-)
The original rack rusted out so I bot a new one (was a
Bernardin replacement rack kit) a couple of years ago. I'm pretty sure the
pot and original rack was somewhere around 20 bucks. The replacement racks
(I got more than one , small, large), were also around 20 bucks. I've
gotten, um, maybe 15 years out of them? I expect it'll be another 10 before
I have to buy another rack.
I use a round cake rack. Works a treat. And when I set it on top of
jars, bottom side up, there are six divisions that keep half pint jars
nicely in place during the boil.
Thanks, but, um, no thanks! LOL, us experienced canners know better, but
you are right, if this is considered a 'start up'; fee, it'd turn me off!
Kathi
That's such a disappointment. Tomorrow morning I'm scheduled to do a
demo for Zoë Francois, co-author of "Artisan Bread in 5 Minutes a Day."
Check her site, http://www.zoebakes.com. She's a delightful woman.
She's bringing a friend and you can be sure I'll be talking about
equipment. AFAIC, the only pieces of specialized equipment that are
*must haves* are a canning funnel (and I don't use it for spreads) and a
jar lifter. (Watch out for them banana peels, Jorge.)
