need help peeling hard boiled eggs

Store-bought eggs are usually old enough that I don't have a problem
peeling them when they're hard boiled, but Murphy's Law kicked in
tonight... since I only had a dozen eggs and I need to stuff eggs for
a party tomorrow. Anyway, the method to hard boil that says to start
eggs in cold water, bring to a boil, turn it off as soon as it comes
to a boil and time for 12 minutes, drain and cool down with cold water
and ice cubes produced perfect yolks... but my eggs were too fresh and
the shell stuck to the egg while I peeled it. Darn! I should have
cracked them all and let them sit in the cold water to cool. The
shells come off like a charm doing it that way, but the instructions
didn't say to do that and I forgot about it until I ran into the
sticking problem. So of course, I'm locking the barn door now.... is
cracking the shells and letting them sit in the refrigerator the best
course of action or should I do something else?
TIA
