I'm still trying to figure out the attraction of facebook and twitter.
LOL You won't find me on Facebook. Apparently once you join it's really
hard to unsubscribe.
Lots of people know that. Doesn't make it true, though. I think it's
comparable to this group. If someone does something really
embarrassing, it would be impossible to erase all trace of themselves
here. For instance, I have every single one of your posts archived on
my hard drive...just kidding. I have maybe a dozen posts from this
group saved, all recipes. What usually happens, both for this group and
for Facebook, is that people just drop out. They don't say goodbye,
they don't unsubscribe (at least at first) and often they don't even
decide to quit. They just stop reading, and then stop posting. Same
with FB. If somebody has saved that embarrassing picture to their hard
drive, it's gone. You can plead with FB all you want. They can't erase
all trace of you from FB. It's a social networking site. If you don't
want to share, maybe that's not the place for you. On the other hand,
it has pretty sophisticated security, so you can limit your sharing.
From what I've read, people have gotten in trouble because they haveshared with their friends, not realizing that friend "A" is also friends
with their boss. Then when they slam their boss on FB, that slam goes
right to their boss. Just like Real Life.
For those with more structured lives, people who want to leave FB post a
goodbye message to their wall, and then select the "deactivate account"
command. I had a friend do that. She tried FB, and said it wasn't for
her. She said to feel free to Email her. Her husband is still a FB
friend, though. I thought her son and GF were also, but I guess not.
The GF's mother is, though, so I guess that's why I see so many pictures
of her.
As for Twitter... doesn't that require a specific type
of cell phone?
I don't know. I suspect you can send messages on your computer, but
what would be the point? My read of Twitter is that it is for people
with smart phones who are stuck in line and have nothing else to do.
That's what my daughter and her friend do, anyway. I've got no use for
it.
I know that my cell phone can send and receive messages from FB, and
it's not a smart phone, but I see no need for that, plus it has a
numeric keypad, and it's bad enough entering telephone numbers and names
for people I call frequently.
