I have purchased 3 WP family appliances:
Range/oven
==========
Roper gas range/oven - generally happy, but after warranty expired, the
oven control computer unit croaked. Initially, the part price was MSRP
over $300, searching on the net I could find it as low as $264. I sent
three angry e-mails to WP c/s, and two phone calls, and got nowhere in
terms of getting this piece for anything less than half the price I paid
on the oven just 2 1/2 years before. Sat on the situation for 5 months
and used my toaster oven for all my baking (the range still worked
fine). When I could finally afford the part, I found the MSRP had
bottomed out to $127, or $59-$83 on the net, and a few sources under
$50. I ordered from one at $42 plus shipping. It arrived, took me less
than 15 minutes to pull the oven out from the wall, take off the back,
swap the controllers, put the back back on and push the oven back into
place. Worked perfectly, needed no recalibration. That was over two
years ago.
Did a little research and found that there had been a mass croaking of
this controller across a huge number of models, such that a class action
suit was being formed. WP responded by reducing this part's price
dramatically, and like so many appliance repair parts, you can really do
a lot better going to places on the net than your local repair
contractors if you can DIY, and this particular repair was so easy,
anyone who can pull their oven out from the wall can DIY.
Dishwasher
==========
Bought from Lowes, after a bad experience trying to buy from America's
TV, Furniture and Appliance. The DW went bad 7 months after purchase.
I could not find the receipt, contacted Lowes for replacement copy.
They only retain records for 6 months. I had to contact corporate.
They got the purchase info to me via e-mail. Got the repair contractor
out there. They refused to accept electronic record as proof of
purchase date. Had to pay myself, went round in circles with Lowes,
repair contractor and WP. Ended up talking to a lawyer on the radio, he
said I would have to sue in small claims court, and I could only go
after cost of repair, most likely. Time off of work for day of case
could not be tagged on, and so I wouldn't collect enough to make it
worth time off.
Do not buy from Lowes unless you also get extended warranty, or you are
better at not losing receipts than I am.
Washing machine
===============
Bought at sears. Knock on wood, no problems so far. Sears retains
sales records and can reissue receipts up to two years from purchase.
Out of factory warranty by now, and it still runs great.
I am of mixed emotion on extended warranties. I remember a time was
XW's were a joke, pure profit, as things outlasted even those. But now
days, that just isn't the case. And based on my experience, I would
likely buy the XW on anything WP if I can afford it (I couldn't spare
the cash on the DW, or I would have).
