Our house is just around a curve in the road. People come round the
curve too fast, lose control a bit, run off the road and over our
mailbox, regain control and roar on. We've lost about a dozen
mailboxes and learned several lessons:

-Do not buy the single-piece mailbox/post that is filled with sand,
such that it can be knocked over when bumped, then re-set-up. We
spent 89 bucks on one and it lasted one day. Won't stand up to a 40
mph slam.

-The post with the spring at the bottom is similar. OK for slow
impact, not much good for high-speed.

-For a little satisfaction, look around after the impact. A couple of
times we found parts. Bits of turn signal lenses, etc. Made me feel
good that the damage cost 'em more than it cost me.

-Move the mailbox. We finally moved ours about 80 feet, right beside
the neighbor's driveway. It's a little farther to walk but it's only
been hit once so far.

Get a big landscaping rock and put it next to the box.

Years ago I knew someone who had problems with kids knocking his over
for grins. He got a section of railroad track, buried it and built a
cheap pine box around it. The track weight is 90 pounds a foot. The
kids hit it once. I kinda doubt you could get away with that these
days.
