Imagine that - comics as an art. Americans seem to have accepted comics

Ever since Sylvester Stallone, Americans seem to have accepted
stupidity as chic.
The illustrated novel is just a further degrading of basic reading
skills and the acceptance of stupid as the norm. Japanese anime is
animation at its worst. It all looks identical because indivuality is
unacceptable in Japanese culture. Not sure why the Japanese are so
sexually bizarre.
I remember our field support techs being told, in no uncertain terms,
porno trash like Playboy and Hustler were not allowed to be brought
into Japan and doing so would get it confiscated and the support tech
possibly banished permenently. It was quite a shock when I later
discovered Japanese sex anime on the web. What? Hustler is verboten
because it was way too tame compared to Japanese tentacles and child porn?
My son's room is filled with big thick
comic novels....
Nothing wrong with comics, in their place. I had a pretty good stack
when I was kid, Donald Duck, Superman, Little Lulu. I have no doubt
it helped in learning to read better. OTOH, I was hitting the
bookmobile pretty hard, even in grade school, and tackling meatier
stuff.
No doubt it has to do with reading being taught in school and parents
reading to their children. Until well into the third grade, we were
read stories for at least an hour a day, every day. I still remember
some of the stories I vividly imagined while sitting with my head down
on my desk, our teacher imbuing each character with an individual
personality simply by varying her tone and inflection. Reading out
loud is a skill, too, and several of my teachers made us do it by
reading aloud to the other students.
I'm sad to say, I don't think much of this is going on in our schools,
these days. Maybe I'm wrong. I'm somewhat heartened by the success
of big book chains like Borders and B&N. Nice to know the printed
word is not dead yet. OTOH, book prices ....er... nevermind. That's
a rant for another day. ;)
