I believe in "natural watering" and I have only reliably grown two herbs
over the years: chives and oregano.

It's a mistake to make a religion of herbs. Basil doesn't winter over
period, because as soon as it sets seeds it starts to die. If you aren't
willing to water it, you must suffer. No basil for you.
