Same here. I have been to Germany a few times and can only think of two dinners that were not good. One was in an Italian restaurant, which certainly not my choice. The other was in a touristy spot in Rothenburg ob der Tauber where a Jauger steak turned out to be a hamburg patty with an uninspired mushroom gravy over it. When I was a kid my best friend was German and I ate a lot of home cooked German food at his place. I loved it.

Other than the often encountered 'too salty' problem, I have always been quite happy with German food in restaurants all over Germany and Austria, especially the restaurants in small towns! Having lived there for two years, and afterwards visiting often, I have developed an intense craving for anything with 'wurst' in its name, even the local sausages sold in the train stations! This carries over in to other cultures as well, and my first thoughts when coming into a country are 'what kind of sausage is popular here?'
