How have you done with Cantaloup? :-)

Usually very well.. Smell is very important.

However this last week, I took a chance. There is a grand opening
sale at one of the Sunflowers with cantaloupes 3/$1. I didn't smell
as much of an odor of ripeness with these...but I took a chance and
went with them anyway. I wanted melons. LOL.

But usually, if they don't smell ripe, I don't get them. This goes
for nectarines, peaches, strawberries especially. They have to smell
ripe for me to get a good one.

I am definitely a sniffer of peaches and nectarines. Sometimes the
sniff test can lead you astray with white peaches. They can be
aromatic even when they're hard as rocks.

The heat here in Washington has been good for the produce. We're
getting fantastic cherries, peaches, and apricots.

So *that* is why cherries have been so relatively cheap here in the Chicago
area, last week snagged some for 99 cents/lb at the soopermarket...price has
been around $1.99 for a whiles now, and even that is considered decent.

Even the Rainier cherries were cheap this year. I'd never seen them for
under $3 a pound until last month. They're more perishable than Bings,
which is why they're expensive.
