The above says an enormous improvement was done with very little effort.
Why didn't they do that before she performed? I suspect that they had
multiple makeup people working on her for a long time. She looked the
way she did because that's how they wanted her to look.
These shows get thousands of people showing up to audition, hundreds make it
to the stage. Some last 30 seconds or less. I doubt much time is spent on
makup the first time around. You may be correct, but I've seen plenty of
Ms. Boyles in real life. I'm sure she will get the makeover though.
As for the "surprised" looks by Simon and the stagehands, yeah, they
just "happened" to have a camera pointing at them. I strongly suspect
those were both scripted.
Her voice? Good, but I suspect that she wouldn't sound anything like
that in your living room. They cranked up something, I'm guessing
reverb.
I know they have mulitple cameras. The staehands are a regular part of the
camera work no matter who is on. Skillful editing is definitely part of the
show though. As for the sound, all the pros have help so why not her?
I'm sorry if I seem really cynical, but I am. I've seen too many of
these "reality shows". My wife watches "The Great Race", or something
like that. I hate it. They are running around. They don't know where
they are going, or how they are going to get there. They make random,
last minute decisions about their transportation. They ask random
people on the street. Sometimes they are given bad information, or they
make bad decisions, and they end up in the wrong place. There's always
a full camera crew waiting for them!
The Amazing Race. I watch it and like it. Yes, you do have to consider
that given the airport security, camera crews and so forth, some planning
has to be done well in advance and behind the scenes. Much of the show has
to be scripted, but I look beyond that. Remove some of the silliness of
the competition and you get to see parts of like in other countries that you
don't often see. They often go to towns off the typical tourist spots and
it can be quite interesting. Forget the alleged competition and focus on
the travel portion and scenery and you may find it not only tolerable, but
likeable.
