Apparently, the food origins law will go into effect today. It's not
perfect and even a bit self contradictory but it's a start. The
producers' organizations have produced the usual knee-jerk statements;
"It will raise prices".
Yes, the public will pay more to buy USA and
buy locally. The crap we are being sold today
that secretly comes from China is cheaper, and
we will spend more for something else if you're
forced to tell us that you're using Chinese crap.
As you say, it's a start. Given the recent revelations about
food, I hope we get even more labeling that includes processed
foods. Maybe a list of countries, since it would be rather
awkward to put the countries in the list of ingredients.
Compared to the fine print we have today? Doesn't
seem like a burden to me. Chicken (USA), Water (USA),
New Mexican Style Chili Peppers (USA and Mexico),
Tomato (USA and Mexico), Salt (USA), Garlic (USA and
China), Black Pepper (Indonesia and Viet Nam), Disodium
Inosinate (Japan), Disodium Guanylate (Japan).
That didn't hurt much, did it?
I'd like to have that information.
