It does not matter where they were born and if they grew up with it or
not. I know a lot of people being incorrect about a lot of things in
their native cuisines. Even in my family we have always called some
dishes by wrong names - because it was the family way of naming things.
When such true experts as Károly Gundel, Elek Magyar and George Lang all
point out the same specific naming conventions and the same specific
differences between similar dishes - and stress them - they do it for a
good reason and this reason trumps any anecdotal evidence. The reason
in question is simple - names are given to things to facilitate
communication. If I order a paprikás, I do not want to get a pörkölt -
and vice versa.

If one of your relations makes something that s/he calls a paprikás but
which is really a pörkölt, what is his/her name for pörkölt?

Perhaps they have never eaten or made pörkölt. In the US, if I want to
order a paprikás, I try to ascertain how it's prepared before I order.
Nomenclature and recipes vary so much that one often doesn't know what will
be served. I will say, however, that several Hungarian restaurants I go to
in the Phoenix area seem to served dishes prepared from traditional
"authentic" recipes. I have had such good luck in other places.
