Hi Folks!
Sometime on Monday while we were at work, our A/C quit working. Now
that's a *serious* issue during a Phoenix summer. It was too late in
the day to call anyone licensed to service our brand of equipment
without voiding the warranty, so we weathered the night. Temp inside
reached 99°F. I went to work on Tuesday (and made phone calls to find
the right service company, while David stayed home with the cats,
waiting to check into a motel. By the time he left the house at 1:00
p.m., the temp inside had reached 102°F.
By then Mr. Bailey, one of our older cats, was very ill, and David was
becoming ill. With 5 cats, the migration to the motel was no easy
feat, but at least they were in a cool place. :-)
At 5:00 p.m. I met the service tech at the house and he diagnosed the
problem as a burned out compressor starter motor and several other
miscellaneous parts. 10-year replacement warranty on the compressor
and 5-year replacement warranty on the othe parts, but only a 1-year
warranty on labor, which had passed. The bad news was the labor...
$864, which we didn't have. By then the temp in the house was 106°F,
and all the fish in the aquarium were dead, but at least David, the
cats, and I were okay. Mr. Bailey had begun to recover.
Quandry...what to do. Not enough money to pay the labor until 8/22.
Not enough money to live in a motel until then either. No friends who
were capable of taking both of us and 5 cats in for the duration. I
would have been hesitant to ask anyone to do that anyway.
The best possible news... Our very best friends offered to loan us
the money until my payday, and the A/C will be repaired tomorrow
morning! I really didn't want to take the loan, but it was really the
only practical option, and our friends made their generous offer
without our ever mentioning the possibility.
We should be back in our house by tomorrow afternoon.
When I arrived at the motel I discovered that our room had encrypted
Wi-Fi, and I was able to connect with my work laptop. Unfortunately,
I can't access the Cox news servers unless I'm connected through Cox.
However, I was able to find a totally free news server, nntp.aioe.org,
but I can only read posts, not submit them. I am working from the
motel today (I can't possibly leave our 5 cats here alone), and I'm
taking a vacation day tomorrow to be at the house while the service
tech is there.
Lesson learned: You never know who your truest friends are until the
chips are down. We are more grateful than I could possibly say.
I will be posting periodically on google groups until we're back in
the house.
Cheers to all...and thanks for reading!
Wayne
Bummer Wayne- I'm sending cool thoughts your way. You sure find out
who your real friends are at times like this- sorry about your fishies.
