The braces he wore spread the arc of his upper teeth out and ahead and brought his lower teeth into alignment, allowing not only the crooked teeth to correct, but enabling his lower jaw to grow outward and forward, correcting what might have wound up as a weak chin and jaw line. Wow, I had no idea that the jaw would actually grow so much at that
age! I thought we're stuck with the jawbone we were born with. How
old was he when he began the process of braces?
11. He's 13 1/2 now, still growing, voice cracking. I asked Bhatia if in some cases a weak chin might just be a family resemblance or if it were always the result of poor dental alignment. She said that the typical "18th century british aristocrat" profile was the result of a lower jaw trapped inside an upper jaw (traumatic overbite) and while the misaligned teeth and bite were indeed genetic, with the correct orthodontic procedures and appliances they'd have wound up looking more like George Cluny than Roger Rabbit.
