What's wrong with Ebay? I LOVE it. I am able to find parts & pieces
of all kinds of things that without Ebay, I'd never find in a million
years, given where I live and the retail sources available to me. It
is a big blessing for me to have the Ebay resource.
I *don't* buy anything used that I haven't seen up close and in person
first.
I've bought tons of stuff on eBay, and only had
a couple problems. eBay refunded the only one which
was a complete ripoff.
I've managed to acquire all kinds of stuff that would
have been difficult or impossible to get otherwise.
One of my happiest acquisitions is the front-panel
of a PDP-11/70 computer, and another one is a manual
for an IBM 7030.
I think the most expensive item I've bought is a
Branson 8200 ultrasonic welder. Only $700 plus $150
for shipping across the country. That was a great
deal. A used equipment dealer would ask $1500-3000
for a machine like this one.
I bought it for an experiment. I didn't even
know what kind of ultrasonic source I needed until
I started snooping around eBay to see what's available.
I think that's a key to eBay's success -- no matter who
you are, they can show you something you didn't know
you wanted.
