You got off easy, R. If you were Dave's wife he'd have expected you to
knit a tent in the car driving up and there's have been no hotel at all.

Hope you had one of those fabulous antipasto buffets at Rome. The only
place those are done better is Puglia.

No, we didn't eat at all in Rome, as a matter of fact. We hadn't
researched the hotel, but booked one that seemed to be near the train
station with a restaurant in it just in case. We got there, it was NEAR a
station, just not the centro station...we'd have had to take the shuttle
to the main station which only runs at 7 am and 5 pm, which left out any
chance to have dinner in the city. "So eat dinner at the hotel" you might
say...well, it was august, and as those who live in Italy know, August is
national vacation month....therefore the restaurant was closed for the
entire month. THere were no restaurants in walking distance and no
sidewalks. This would not do with two kids, one under 3, so we went back
home. We lost a night of hotel fee but at least it was only a 2 hour
drive home. We'll probably try again this summer when Scott has leave
again, which I hate because it's so freaking hot here in the summer.

Start well ahead and book at The Beehive which is owned by expats and is
very reasonably priced. It books up early, so don't wait. They have a
vegetarian cafe, but I'd drift down toward Fontana di Trevi at suppertime
and there are a bunch of cheapish restaurants along the two streets that run
uphill from it on the right side. Gioia Mia is one I often use. They'll
let you feed the babes off your plates and it isn't expensive for Rome
anyway. That said, I do not eat 4 courses but your DH may, and that can add
up.

Hot is hot, but if you spend from lunch until 4 in the room with a fan then
a quick, tepid shower, you can still have fun-- or I do.

You shouldn't miss Rome, but you may also enjoy a place like Gaeta where you
can rent an apartment, go to the beach, eat bufala and pizza and cook one
meal a day in the apt straight out of the fish stalls. Do the passeggiata
in the evening, get a gelato-- really typical Italian sea holiday as long as
it is June, July or September when you do it.
