I was thinking more along the line of someone asking a person out for
a dinner date, and to a nice romantic restaurant, not a cheap meal at
a dinner or the corner bar, and especially as a first date or early
stage of a relationship.

You've mentioned first dates a couple of times now. I've never been the first to ask someone out on a first date. Sorry, the man always beat me to it. And yes, when he invited me he paid for dinner. If I asked him out to dinner after that I paid for the meal or at least firmly attempted to. I've known a couple of guys who got bent out of shape about it (and as sarah mentioned, that was the last date). One thing I'm not going to do is get into a protracted argument about it.
