Ask for your receipt. That way, they have to ring it up.

Exactly. While I rarely eat at fast food joints I've never ever
encountered
someone behind the counter who didn't ring up the order and give me a
receipt with my change.

McDonalds never gives receipts unless you ask for it.

A recent order at Church's chicken, my order came to $5.23. I
gave the cashier $5.25 and she gave me the quarter back and said,
"Don't worry about it". I smelled a rat. Sure enough - I saw
her pocket the $5.

I even wrote the company with a complete description of the girl,
the exact register and time of night. They emailed me back
apologizing for the quality of the food (?).

Why on *earth* would you bother about something like that, fer cryin'
out loud...???

Because theft like that drives up the prices for everyone.  Fast food may
not cost much compared to a meal at a "real" restaurant but someone has to
pay for the ingredients.  That would be the patrons of said establishment.
It's no different from shoplifting or a customer walking out on a restaurant
check.  If more people reported incidents like this rather than turn a blind
eye the perpetrators would possibly be arrested and charged, even if the
charge was minor.  They most certainly would be fired, and rightly so.  I'd
have either waited a minute to see if I could locate the manager to report
the person on the spot (with a follow-up to the company in case the pimply
geek manager was in cahoots).  Failing that, I'd call the employee on it on
the spot, loudly and in front of the other customers, and watch them try to
bluster their way out of it :)

It's just a crummy fried chikken joint, I frankly wouldn't bother...

In any case, it sounds like they don't care much about inventory
control, choosing honest employees, etc...

I guess this incident "made" sqwertz's "day" (such as it is), so it's
something he could be all outraged about and whine about...but then
he's extremely "ADD" about any perceived "slight". I'd be embarrassed
to mention that I even frequented such a kraphola as Church's, it's
strictly "ghetto - level"...
