I remember it was in a supermarket.

Years ago, in the East and the Eastern Midwest, it was common to find
either bulk or 1-pound bags of whole poppyseed in the produce section of
many supermarkets and the seeds were very fresh. There was also an
electric grinder where you could have the produce clerk grind the seeds
for you. That's been virtually non-existant for decades.

When I buy seeds now (from Penzey's or similar), I store in them in the
freezer if I don't have an immediate need for them. Likewise with most
anything else that has a chance to go rancid, such as nuts, grains, and
whole grain flours.

were taken out of hibernation this morning, as I have bagels retarding

big Christmas gift box of nuts, grains and flours (from me to me)
that I got from KA Flour. Best place for them.

Absolutely the best place for them. I keep all my nuts, grains, wholegrain
flours, etc., in the freezer. I probably have more stuff like that in
there than I do meats and vegetables.
